The Sanischare primary health post, our flagship clinic serving refugee and host communities in eastern Nepal's Jhapa District, has just completed a significant expansion. The new wing adds two maternal care rooms, a pharmacy stocked through our partnership with district health authorities, and a private counselling room for mental health services.
Prior to this expansion, pregnant women in the surrounding villages often travelled several hours to reach the nearest public hospital — a journey that, for families without vehicles, frequently meant arriving too late. The new facility means prenatal visits, safe deliveries, and postnatal follow-up are now available within walking distance for roughly 2,000 families.
The expansion was made possible by a combination of donor support, in-kind labour from community members, and technical guidance from our board and clinical advisors. Operating costs are shared with the district, and the facility is staffed by local clinicians — ensuring long-term sustainability.
Work now turns to the second phase: a small inpatient ward and a telemedicine link to Kathmandu-based specialists for complex cases.
